A team of year 7 and 8 students from Barry Comprehensive School were victorious recently at the annual 8-a-side Vale of Glamorgan Schools Cricket Tournament.
In sweltering heat at the Barry Athletic ground, the boys set about their task by first defeating Cowbridge by 71 runs to 58, then St Richard Gwyn by 63 runs to 36 and finally losing their last group game to Stanwell by 15 runs. The Barry Comprehensive team had scored more runs than their opponents in total to progress to the final to meet Llantwit Major.
After spending an already long day in the sun, the Barry team, ably led by Adam Sylvester at wicket keeper and in form with the bat, the team were put into bat where Sam Hopkins, Sion Spence and Evan Wells amassed a total of 74 runs in the allotted 8 overs. Both Adam and Sam had to retire as they reached their maximum of 25 runs each. A tough task for Llantwit to beat, so the bowlers of Cameron Stewart, Matthew Rowles and Sion Spence had to keep things tight which they managed with some determined fielding and boundary guarding led by Alec Czyzynski, Oliver Bartlet and Evan Wells. Llantwit were restricted to just 63 runs in their 8 overs, giving a deserved victory to the Barry Comprehensive students.
Thanks must go to Mr. Davies from Cowbridge for organising the very successful event and to Barry Athletic Cricket Club for hosting the day and allowing the use of their facilities.
