In February, two Barry Sixth Formers, John Frazer and Gareth Hurman, participated in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project.  Through the project, students take part in two half-day seminars and a one-day visit to the former Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau.  Students then pass on the lessons that they learn about the Holocaust and its relevance to today in their schools and communities.

On Tuesday 18th March Barry Comprehensive hosted the regional final of the BGS Schools’ Geology Challenge. The competition was for A level Geology students from all over Wales.  As part of the event each team had to prepare a poster on this year’s topic: ‘Geology and the Future of the Welsh Economy’. Now in its 6th year, the annual Healthy Living Week at Barry Comprehensive School has become established as a focal point of the spring term calendar with students and staff taking part in a wide range of activities promoting healthy eating, healthy bodies, healthy minds, healthy relationships and – for the second time – a healthy planet.

From February 17 to February 21 Barry Comprehensive School was pleased to host a visit for our first ever Swedish visitor, Mr Bernt Rudholm, or Mr Bernt, as he came to be known by staff and students.

Bernt first heard about our school through his interest in green wood.  Bernt read an article in the British magazine: Living Woods Magazine, in 2012. Continue reading

Over the past two weeks, Barry Comprehensive School’s AS and GCSE Geology groups have completed their field visits in preparation for their coursework. The AS group spent two days in the Brecon Beacons studying the geology of the Ystradfellte valley. They visited the Porth yr Ogof cave system and a number of spectacular waterfalls, looking into the variety of past environments in the area. Continue reading
